It’s been less than four months since Samsung was forced to issue an embarrassing recall of one of its flagship phones, but the company has announced that it is expecting a big increase in year-on-year operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2016. In Q4 earnings guidance, published today, Samsung said it was expecting a consolidated operating profit of 9.2 trillion won (about $7.2 billion) for the period — almost double the 6.14 trillion won (about $5.2 billion) in profit it received in the same quarter last year. If accurate, the guidance indicates that Samsung’s costly recall of its Note 7 smartphone was only a temporary blip in the company’s financial situation, rather than a lingering hit to consumer confidence.
By Se Young Lee SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's LG Electronics Inc estimated on Friday it fell to its first quarterly operating loss in six years in October-December, a drop that analysts pinned on continued mobile losses and seasonally weaker appliances sales. The world's second-biggest television maker behind Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it likely swung to a 35 billion won ($29.36 million) loss for the fourth quarter, its first since a bigger loss in the fourth quarter of 2010. The result would compare with a Thomson Reuters StarMine SmartEstimate of 98 billion won in profit derived from a survey of 21 analysts.

Yes, lots of us have made cat ears move with our minds, or raised a ball in a tube by concentrating, or played with some other kind of EEG-activated toy. Reading general states of focus with electrodes, then correlating it to some kind of activity, is an old trick — and one that’s often oversold. But sometimes, there’s a great fusion of form and function. Because Star Wars is a weirdly perfect fit for mind-controlled toys, and it always will be.Last year’s Tribeca Film Festival interactive show gave us a BB-8 droid you could move with your mind. ...
By Diane Bartz and Jim Finkle WASHINGTON/BOSTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against D-Link Corp on Thursday, accusing the Taiwan-based manufacturer of failing to take reasonable steps to protect its routers and internet-linked security cameras from hackers. The FTC brought the charges as part of a broader effort to improve security of internet-connected devices, including routers, webcams, digital video recorders and other widely used consumer electronics devices. Concerns about security of internet-connected devices, which are sometimes referred to collectively as the internet of things, or IoT, have surged since last year when hackers used armies of compromised routers, webcams and other electronic devices to launch a series of increasingly powerful attacks that severed access to some of the world's biggest websites.
Toshiba Corp plans to meet with creditor banks on Tuesday to explain how it is addressing a massive charge that the Japanese company says it must take on its U.S. nuclear business, three bankers briefed on the meeting said. Toshiba officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Syndicated loans could be endangered because credit-ratings downgrades put Toshiba in violation of loan covenants, the bankers said, adding that it was routine for them to grant a waiver in such a case to avoid a funding crisis.

Today at CES 2017, Cherry announced the new MX Board Silent, an updated version of the company’s classic G80-3000 mechanical keyboard. It uses MX Red Silent and MX Black Silent switches that claim to offer the same satisfying resistance (45 cN of force for the Red, 60 cN for the Black) as their noisy counterparts, but with a dramatic reduction in noise. Cherry MX switches have long been the gold standard for mechanical keyboards.
