'Gravity' highlights personal adversity in deep space journey
Date : 01/10/2013 09:02

By Mary Milliken LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Watching an astronaut tumbling into the void of deep space might make a mere mortal's own adversities seem rather small. But "Gravity," a drama starring Sandra Bullock and showing in U.S. theaters on Friday, was born out of the setbacks suffered by one man in the midst of the last recession: its director and co-writer, Alfonso Cuaron. The Mexican filmmaker had already achieved international success with films like "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" in 2004 and "Children of Men" in 2006. ...
'Meatballs' sequel swallows up U.S., Canadian box office
Date : 29/09/2013 13:39

By Lisa Richwine and Chris Michaud LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The sequel to "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" devoured the weekend box office competition. The animated 3D "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2," which tells the story of monster-sized fruits, vegetables and cheeseburgers that come to life as "foodimals," earned $35 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday, easily beating all competitors. "Cloudy 2" outpaced car racing drama "Rush," which pulled in $10. ...
Hollywood dumps romantic comedies for raunchier laughs
Date : 28/09/2013 09:04

By Piya Sinha-Roy LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - From "Some Like It Hot" to "Pretty Woman," "Sleepless in Seattle" to "The Wedding Planner," romantic comedies have long been Hollywood's box office darlings, but this fall raunchy R-rated comedies are getting top billing. Kicking off a season of coarse comedy is actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut "Don Jon," out in U.S. theaters this weekend, about a young, attractive man who struggles to connect with women due to his porn addiction. ...
'Foodimals' stalk animated film world of 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2'
Date : 26/09/2013 22:18

By Piya Sinha-Roy LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Fruits, vegetables and cheeseburgers get their film shelf-life extended in the animated comedy "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2," as the franchise explores a new world of living, breathing "foodimals." "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," released in 2009 and inspired by a 1978 children's book of the same name, saw the fictional island of Swallow Falls devoured by giant but inanimate food that falls out of the sky, generated from a machine created by the island's eccentric inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader). ...
'Rush' screenwriter inspired by rivalry, not Formula One racing
Date : 25/09/2013 09:24

By Mary Milliken LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The fast-paced and adrenaline-filled drama "Rush" may be one of the most engaging films about the world of Formula One racing, but British screenwriter Peter Morgan says he couldn't be less of a fan of the elite motor sport. Morgan, a two-time best-writing Oscar nominee for 2006's "The Queen" and 2008's "Frost/Nixon," simply wanted to tell a tale of rivalry between an Austrian and an Englishman. As it happens, the battle for the 1976 F1 championship between Niki Lauda and James Hunt fit perfectly into Morgan's plans. ...
